What should I wear for my Seattle Engagement session?

You have picked the date, you have picked the location, now comes the inevitable question:

"What are we supposed to wear?"

Don’t stress! You don’t need to completely reinvent your wardrobe for your engagement session. My goal is for you to look like the best-dressed version of yourselves while still being comfortable enough to laugh, walk, cuddle, and have fun.

Here are my seven favorite tips for choosing your Seattle engagement session outfits.

1. Wear Something That Feels Like YOU

This is probably my most important tip. If you never wear dresses, don't feel like you need to show up in a ball gown. If your idea of dressing up is your favorite jeans and a great sweater, let's go with that.

Your photos should look like you—not like you're playing dress-up.

That said, I do recommend stepping it up just a little. Think of it as wearing what you would choose for a really nice date night.

2. Coordinate, Don't Match

Please don't feel like you both need to wear the same color shirt. Instead, choose colors that work together.

For example, if you're wearing a dusty blue dress, your partner could wear navy pants and a cream sweater. If you're wearing a rust-colored dress, try pairing it with dark jeans, a cream shirt, and brown shoes.

Some of my favorite Seattle-friendly colors are:

Cream • Camel • Olive • Rust • Navy • Dusty Blue • Sage • Gray • Burgundy

And don't be afraid of color! Timeless doesn't have to mean beige.

3. Bring Two Outfits If You Can

I love having a casual look and a dressier look.

Your first outfit might be jeans, a sweater and boots. Then we can switch it up with a dress, blazer, or suit for your second look.It gives your gallery a lot more variety without making the session feel like a full-blown fashion shoot.

And if changing outfits sounds like a pain? Skip it! One outfit you absolutely love is better than two outfits you're uncomfortable in.

4. Think About Your Seattle Location

Your outfit should make sense with where we're photographing you.

For a forest or park, think sweaters, boots, flowing dresses and earthy colors.For a beach or waterfront session, lighter colors, layers and flowy fabrics look beautiful.For downtown Seattle, you can get a little more polished with a blazer, dress, heels, boots or a great jacket.And if we're heading somewhere industrial like Georgetown, don't be afraid to add some personality with denim, leather or a cool pair of boots.

Basically, don't wear an outfit that fights with your location. We want everything to work together.

5. Remember…This Is Seattle

You already know where I'm going with this.

Layers. Layers. Layers.

Seattle weather can change its mind pretty quickly, so bring a jacket, cardigan, sweater or coat that works with your outfit.

And don't let a cloudy day scare you! Overcast skies give us some of the prettiest, softest light for portraits. If rain is in the forecast, we'll keep an eye on it together. A little drizzle doesn't automatically mean we have to cancel. Sometimes a cute umbrella and a little Seattle weather make the photos even more fun.

6. Don't Forget the Little Things

Shoes matter more than you might think!

We're going to walk, so make sure you have something comfortable. If you want to wear heels, bring them! You can wear comfortable shoes while we're moving around and change into your cute shoes when we're ready to photograph.

Also think about:

Jewelry
Watches
Hats
Jackets
Scarves
Hair accessories

And please don't forget to get that engagement ring cleaned before your session. It's going to get its fair share of camera time!

7. Most Importantly, Don't Overthink It

At the end of the day, your engagement session isn't really about your clothes.

It's about you two.

The laughing, the inside jokes, the way you look at each other, the hand holding, the ridiculous moments, and all those little things that make your relationship yours.

I'll help you with posing so you don't have to worry about what to do with your hands or where you're supposed to stand.

You just need to show up, wear something you feel great in, and enjoy being engaged.
